Saltwater Collective

alexanderkenton saltwater collective

One of my favorite things about Instagram is meeting my “insta-friends” in real life. Some months ago, Saltwater Collective started following me on insta and their clean, seaside aesthetic caught my eye, alongside their dedication to ocean conservation and home base in Toronto. As you know, I love everything about the ocean, so started following Saltwater Collective too to learn more of what they’re all about.

Fast forward a few months and many likes on each other’s photos later, and we finally setup a coffee meeting to have a chat in real life. I met with Saltwater Collective co-founder Julie, who was super cool. Much younger than I was expecting and full of passion for her the brand’s vision. She was even so sweet to bring along one of their new crewneck sweatshirts for me, which by the way is the softest thing ever and sustainably made right here in Toronto.

Long story short, wherever you’re reading this post from, you should go check out Saltwater Collective. They’re young entrepreneurs who have found a way to combine sustainability and environmental conservation with fashion – and that’s awesome.

Here’s a fun outtake shot with my friend Dustin after lunch the other day. We always dress very similar and he almost wore his Saltwater Collective sweatshirt that day too. And I almost wore light ripped jeans. Twin moment narrowly avoided… or was that a missed opportunity for a good photo? lol.

The Sweater Tuck

perry ellis sweater

Sweater season is here! If there’s one thing to look forward to in winter, it’s all the cozy knits to wear. I have been slowly growing my collection of sweaters and thanks to Perry Ellis, my little knitwear roster has grown again. The sweater I’m wearing in this look was first seen on the runway at Perry Ellis’s fall 2015 show back in February. I remember loving the collection at the time, especially the color palette. Fast forward to present (the actual fall season) and the my love for the collection still stands. So when this sweater arrived in the mail the other day, I couldn’t wait to wear it out!

Not sure where the inspiration came from exactly, but I’ve been feeling the partially tucked-in sweater look this season. I gave it a go and I have to say, I’m into the look! What do you think? Have you tried this look?

Union Station

This November has been one to remember! We’ve been having such perfect fall weather in Toronto and it has made getting dressed so much more fun. I have yet to actually need a scarf to stay warm and really, most of the days could be classified as “leather weather.” This look is from one of those fine days. I have to admit, while the warmer temperatures are welcome, they definitely had my style in a bit of confusion at first. I want to embrace fall/winter colors and clothing, but then the weight of summer/fall clothes are all that’s really needed. For this outfit, I decided on a darker color palette, with a dash of red plaid (hi holidays!), yet kept the layers light with a leather bomber jacket.

I’ve been wanting to shoot in the newly unveiled Union Station area after shooting Justine there a few weeks back. It seems like the station has been under renovation for so long, but it’s finally almost finished and the beautiful, classic facade is back. What do you think?

CADILLAC x PSNY: A Journey to Dubai

burj al arab alexander liang

Dubai. A place of luxury, newness and making the impossible possible. A desert oasis in the Middle East. Dubai has been on my travel bucket list for quite some time now. It wasn’t at the top of my list, but it was on the list and last week, I got to check it off!

Traveling with Cadillac, I visited Dubai for the first time, to celebrate the brand’s partnership with Public School NYC and the global reveal of the Cadillac XT5. Finding parallels between fashion and automotive design, Cadillac partnered with Public School NYC, bringing the designers overseas to present the fashion label’s first international runway show and pre-fall collection. A perfect complement to celebrate the debut of Cadillac’s XT5 crossover SUV.

Editors, bloggers, GM employees and auto dealers from around the world met in Dubai for the event. It was a spectacular 4 days and 5 nights, highlighted by the night of the fashion show, XT5 reveal and after party.

Leaving from Toronto, the Canadian group flew in the luxurious comforts of Emirates Airlines business class. And WOW, was it ever an experience! Another item to check off of my travel bucket list. Emirates Airlines is everything you expect it to be and more. I’ve heard so many great things about the airline and after having experienced it firsthand, I can only agree – it’s the best. As soon as you board the plane, you feel a sense of peace. The plane was immaculate, there was plenty of space and the air was fresh, with just the slightest hint of a spa-like scent. Each seat in business class had a personal minibar and tablet to control entertainment, connect to the internet and control the TV (which had to be about a 20″ screen – huge!). The service was on point, of course and the food was delicious, not to mention always available too, by way of the bar lounge at the back of the plane – yes, there was a bar on the plane! At bedtime, you can recline your seat into full flat, bed mode and the flight attendants bring you a mattress, pillows, blanket and eye mask, along with a toiletry kit for when you wake.

Here I am, smiling in my seat before takeoff (and I was still smiling 13.5 hours later when we landed!):

emirates business class

When you need to stretch your limbs, this is the bar lounge at the back of the second level of the plane. There was food and drinks available at all times during the flight and it was a great spot to hangout and chat.

emirates business class bar lounge

Dinner on board Emirates was a 3-course meal. Following the appetizers, I chose the butter chicken as my main. It was so flavorful and cooked to perfection that I almost forgot I was eating on a plane.

It was soon time to land in Dubai and after what felt like just an hour flight, we were ready to hit the ground running. We checked into our home for the trip, the Madinat Jumeirah Al Qasr, situated right on Jumeirah Beach. Upon entering, the lobby was exquisite, boasting giant crystal chandeliers and intricate tile work on the floors and walls. While almost all areas of the resort property had a view of the iconic Burj Al Arab. I wouldn’t have expected anything less in Dubai!

burj al arab night madinat jumeirah lobby

Inside the rooms, the decor took on a traditional Middle Eastern flare, with gold tones, rich, dark wood accents and Persian rugs. Inviting, luxurious and exotic.

madinat jumeirah room

Thanks to jet lag and time zone change, I woke up right at the crack of dawn on the first morning. On the plus side, I was able to catch the sunrise over the resort. The view from my room faced the ocean and looked over one of the many waterways that connected all of the buildings and areas of the Madinat Jumeirah property. Riding the boats around was a pretty cool way to navigate the resort! That is, if we weren’t walking or taking the golf carts.

Speaking of the golf carts, here I am with Mark from Lush Luxury Magazine and Matthew from Sharp Magazine, on the back of one of the golf carts:

During the later half of the morning and early afternoon, we went to check out the famous Burj Al Arab. Fun fact: you can only cross the bridge over to the tower if you’re a guest at the hotel or specially invited. Fortunately, we were invited for a tour of the hotel and also had reservations for lunch at its aquarium, seafood restaurant, Al Mahara.

burj al arab

After lunch, we returned to our hotel to get a ride to the Dubai Mall. We took a Cadillac Escalade of course and while we waited for our driver, I captured a few shots of our hotel’s detailed architecture. Beautiful, right?

We began Day 2 with a press conference and brunch with Public School NYC designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, and Cadillac Executive Director of Design, Andrew Smith. It was great to have some time to chat with them one on one too and hear them speak first hand on the parallels between fashion and automotive design. Afterwards, we did a quick walking tour of Old Dubai, with a boat ride up the Dubai Creek.

In the evening, it was time to get ready for the main event, the Public School NYC fashion show and XT5 reveal. The show space was all outdoors, taking advantage of the warm night air, in Dubai’s new design district, d3.

Public School NYC presented their pre-fall 2016 men’s and women’s collection on the runway that night. Silhouettes and layering alluded to traditional Arab wear, making the Dubai debut all the more fitting. At the conclusion of the runway show, the set ascended to reveal the new Cadillac XT5. Excited to check out the new vehicle, everyone got up from their seats and flooded the stage to get a closer look. The after party began immediately just behind the backdrop. Vashtie DJ’d and we all had so much fun dancing into the wee hours of the morning.

On our final day in Dubai, we set sail on a 90 ft. yacht, for a cruise around the Palm Island. It was a gorgeous day out on the water. We had lunch on the boat and anchored for a swim.

For our last dinner, we were in for a treat at Em Sherif in downtown Dubai. Sitting down for an authentic, traditional Middle Eastern dinner, there was no shortage of flavors or plates! The variety of dishes was endless and each item that was delivered to the table was better than the last. Certainly a meal to remember and I hope I can find a restaurant similar back home in Toronto. If you know of one, please share!

em sherif dubai

To cap it all off, we walked out of Em Sherif just in time to catch the Dubai Fountain’s last show of the night. It’s really quite spectacular in real life, illuminated by 6,600 lights and 25 colored projectors. The Dubai Fountain is the world’s largest choreographed fountain system, stretching 275 m long and shoots water up to 500 ft in the air. Costing $218 million USD to build, it is absolutely worth seeing. Here’s a video I took of the fountain that night!

A huge thanks to everyone who helped me capture these moments throughout the trip! And a big thank you to the Cadillac team for planning such an amazing and unforgettable experience!

Shop & Scotch: The Macallan Lounge at Harry Rosen

the macallan whiskey

Back by popular demand, The Macallan Single Malt Scotch whisky is bringing its tasting lounge back to Harry Rosen for a second year in a row. The pop up bar will be at Harry Rosen’s First Canadian Place location (100 King Street West, Toronto), offering guests the opportunity to sample The Macallan 1824 Series, while they shop the latest in men’s fashion.

If you’re a fan of Scotch whisky, then you’ll be especially excited to know that this year’s lounge will feature The Macallan’s new addition, The Macallan Rare Cask. Visitors to the Lounge will be among the first in Canada to taste this premium spirit, which was created as an ode to the beautiful, natural color and complex flavor that The Macallan is known for. The rarity of The Macallan Rare Cask is attributed to the liquid’s creation in first-fill, Spanish Sherry-seasoned oak casks, hand selected from less than one percent of the finest casks maturing at the distillery. It is truly a luxury offering and it is only fitting for The Macallan Rare Cask to launch at Harry Rosen.

Last week, I got a sneak peek of what the space will be like, as well as a look at the recently revitalized Harry Rosen location. The store now features a fresh look and feel that is bolder and more suited to the younger Bay Street businessman. There is also a new section, dedicated to custom made suits from Amsterdam’s Munro Tailoring. Equipped with a touch screen design program, a range of sample pieces and every fabric swatch you could imagine, the new custom suiting area is a must-try.

The Macallan Lounge at Harry Rosen will be open Monday, November 16 to Friday, November 20, from 3:30 pm – 6:30pm.

ZARA Is Back at CF Toronto Eaton Centre!

zara toronto eaton entre

Fashion lovers rejoice – the day has finally arrived. ZARA is back at CF Toronto Eaton Centre!

I feel like we all have a neighborhood mall that we would consider to be “our mall”. As a resident of downtown Toronto, I almost always find myself at CF Toronto Eaton Centre. I go there to shop, run errands, eat, you name it. It’s my mall. And if you’re like me in calling this shopping centre your go-to spot, then you’ll be as excited as I was to hear that ZARA has reopened and it is bigger and better than ever.

This past Thursday, Justine and I took a little couples’ shopping trip to check out the new ZARA space. WOW. Has the store ever transformed! Now occupying its former space plus an entirely new second floor, ZARA has been able to increase its selection and bring in new collections and items that were previously only available online.

The men’s department has grown to take up almost the entire second floor of the store (score!). Connected to the women’s floor by a chic, ultra-modern, glass mirror staircase, the new men’s department also has it’s own front door on the 4th floor of the mall. New to the men’s offering as well, is the ZARA Studio Collection, which features a more sophisticated look and high quality pieces. The CF Toronto Eaton Centre store is one of the only locations in Canada to offer the Studio Collection, so even if it isn’t your local mall, a trip downtown could be well worth your while.

The overall decor of the new ZARA store has taken on the look of the New York store locations. The lighting is bright and there’s lots of space to take your time shopping through each section. There are more fitting rooms now too and they are brighter, larger and feature more mirrors.

All that being said, I of course could not leave empty handed. I can’t wait to show you what I bought, but in the meantime, here are a few shots from my visit to the new ZARA store. Go check it out and happy shopping!

Rooftop Renegade

Lately, Justine and I have been creating little nicknames for some of our favorite locations to shoot our outfits in Toronto. Naming these spots as other cities, like our “Milan courtyard”, “New York warehouse” and here in this post, the “L.A. rooftop”. It has become our quick code to decide where to shoot and also a fun game when deciding on names for new locations we find.

This week has been especially warm (so happy about it), so it’s back to light layers. For this look, I’m back to my western meets biker mood in black and white. Every now and then I like to bring out these jeans from the Isabel Marant x H&M collaboration collection. They’re definitely a fun piece to have on hand!

You’ve probably noticed that I have been wearing these chelsea boots a lot lately. I find them to be the perfect fall boot. Comfortable and versatile. They’re amazing and they also happen to be on sale now for just $95!

November in the Park

alexander liang

Can you believe it’s already November? This year is seriously flying by…

The autumn colors have been out in full force in Toronto over the past couple weeks and I’ve been dying to snap some photos before all the leaves fall. Fortunately, I was in luck yesterday and found myself in an autumnal wonderland at Queen’s Park. Amber colored leaves covered the ground, with some to spare still hanging on in the trees. Having grown up on the West Coast, I’ve always been quite enchanted by the changing colors of the trees on the East Coast. This year has been especially beautiful and the fall colors seem to be lasting a longer time than last year too. Hopefully that’s a sign that we’ll have a milder winter? Fingers crossed.

This look was all about comfort and warmth, starting with a cozy, waffle knit sweater and distressed jeans. This Mackage coat has been my go-to recently and I’ve been wearing it non-stop on days when I’m not shooting a new outfit, being the photographer for Justine’s shoots and walking our dog, Sofia. It’s the perfect weight for this time of year, with a thin down layer under the waxed cotton exterior. Not to mention, the military green color and style. To dress the look up a bit, I brought my new boots out for their first wear. And I can definitely tell this will be the first of many more wears in the coming months!

What I’m wearing: Mackage coat // COS sweater (similar here) // Mavi jeans (on sale now!) // ALDO boots // Ray-Ban sunglasses // Bulova watch // Hermès bracelet (similar here)

Season Must-Have: The Shearling Coat

coach mens shearling

The shearling coat was spotted in many of the menswear runway shows earlier this year and now has made its way into various collections hitting stores for the fall/winter season. Upon first witnessing an updated redesign of the classic shearling coat (I believe it was Coach, whose collection in which I first saw the trend appear – pictured above), I immediately liked what I was seeing. But then summer came and I was distracted by clothes fit for the sun, sand and surf. Fast forward to present and my light appetite for the shearling coat has now turned into a full blown craving to get the look. The shearling coat has become an absolute must-have this season and if you’re still on the hunt for the coat that will get you through the rest of this year and over the winter into 2016, then I’ve found your piece. Practical in its warmth, yet luxurious in its material, the shearling coat is now taking on a fresh, chic look. Redesigned by many brands to give the classic outerwear piece a welcomed update.

For the extravagant shopper, Burberry has created the ultimate shearling in their bonded alligator and shearling aviator jacket. For a casual $120,000, this jacket is yours (and do let me know when you’re done with it, because I’ll gladly take it off your hands). I should note that there is a non-alligator version as well, which falls at a price point much easier to swallow.

burberry alligator shearling-01

Not to worry though- there are many options available for the more modest shoppers looking to make an investment in their winter outerwear. As previously mentioned, Coach is doing all kinds of right this season, offering an updated version of a classic B3 bomber jacket, as well as car coat and track jacket styles. Acne also did a take on a classic Air Force style, while AllSaints has done biker style shearlings in merlot and grey.

I’ve included a few of my top picks below, but if you don’t see one you like, you can find even more on Lyst, where I’ve saved a larger selection great options, and a few cool shearling accessories too! The cool thing about Lyst too, is that you can save items in your profile and Lyst will email you when they go on sale. Super handy for the savvy online shopper.

All of My Looks from Toronto Fashion Week, Spring 2016

Well, that was fast. I can’t believe Toronto Fashion Week has already come and gone. Last week was action packed, to say the least, with multiple shows to attend on all 5 days. It was a great time to celebrate Canadian talent and I had the pleasure of partnering up with a few of my favorite Canadian fashion labels to wear their pieces throughout the week!

DAY 1:

On the first day of Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week, I sported a coat from KRANE.  Such a good outerwear piece, with a quilted interior and waxed cotton outer. Not to mention the luxe, shearling collar.

Justine and I welcomed our friend, Jill of The August Diaries to Toronto. She has an amazing blog, based in Vancouver, but we’re slowly trying to convince her to move out East haha.

DAY 2:

The second day of fashion week was all about Andrew Coimbra. He’s a rising fashion talent in Toronto and after seeing this collection at his fall preview, I knew I had to get my hands on a couple of his pieces for fashion week. The turtleneck top and trench coat, both feature Andrew’s isallobar print (a line on a map connecting points at which the atmospheric pressure has changed by an equal amount during a specified time).

Here’s a snap of Justine and I that day, as featured in The Kit:

Day 3:

The highlight of the calendar on Day 3 was the Mackage runway show. Justine and I were both dressed by the brand that day – Justine definitely stole the show with that phenom snowsuit from Mackage’s spring show! I opted for an all black look to play on the edgy style of my jacket. And a pop of color just on the lenses of my sunglasses.

DAY 4:

Back to KRANE again on the fourth day of shows! This time, donning a heavy duty duffle coat. This coat is serious warmth, lined with an up-cycled wool military blanket.

Quill & Tine Campaign Video

Winter is coming and that means it’s time to up your cold-weather accessories game. If you haven’t heard of Quill & Tine, then you’re seriously missing out. Designed in Toronto, Canada, the brand is all about combining luxury with tech, offering luxury leather touch screen gloves.

Justine and I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with our friends at Quill & Tine to create this short little love story video, featuring their latest glove style. The “Mitchell” glove is unisex and being offered for a limited time on Kickstarter. So go back the project now to get your hands into these gloves before the winter comes!

The Pattison International at Woodbine Racetrack

woodbine racetrack horse race style alexander liang 01

This past Sunday, I spent the afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack for the Pattison International event. It was a beautiful fall day, perfect to be out watching the horse races.

During the first couple races of the day, the atmosphere was calm and I was able to snap a few photos at the far end of the stands amongst the empty seats. However, as the day progressed, the crowds grew and many attendees made their way from the indoor viewing area to catch the action and fill up the seats outside. Spirits were high, with fans cheering right up to the track sidelines. There were a few races that had very close finishes too – high anxiety for those who’d bet on the winning horses!

Since the Pattison International is one of Woodbine Racetrack’s most prestigious race events of the season, the occasion was celebrated with a few exciting additions to the usual activities on site. Every attendee received a free scarf and their first bet was compliments of Woodbine. There was also a selection of international cuisine offered by a number of guest vendors.

My outfit for the event was lightly inspired by equestrian style, starting with a quilted jacket and an earth-toned color palette. I layered a waffle knit sweater over a polo and wore classic khakis for a preppy vibe.

There are still a few more events left in the season, so if you haven’t been to the races, you can still go! Plus, while you’re there, be sure to snap a selfie and post it to social media with the hashtag #OffToTheRaces to be entered for a chance to win a $1000 gift card to Woodbine.
